Education has always been a key objective of the IIG, and one that the IIG continues to advance in the industry. We are especially proud of the learning and development opportunities we have created through the education programmes we offer.
On 21 November 2019, the students from all our education programmes were excited to be graduating from their respective programmes, and to finally reap the fruits of their labour. This year the format of the proceeding was slightly different, and in order to accommodate more friends and family in the venue, we allocated a specific slot on the agenda to each education programme.
The following Education and Transformation programmes were on the Graduation Day agenda:
- The IIG Class of 2019;
- The Roots and Wings Mentorship programme;
- The IIG Academic Programme; and
- The ILDP Programme
IIG Class of 2019
First up on the agenda, was the Class of 2019, which due to its popularity and demand this year, had two classes. The Class of 2019 did exceptionally well and went on to raise almost R300 000 for their chosen Charity – Ikholwa Children’s home. The proceedings were officially opened by our President, Carla Jordan, followed by an inspirational speech by the guest speaker, Linda Coetzee, who was also closely involved with the students during the classroom sessions. In a sad turn of events, one of the Class of Students, Lunga Macu, sadly passed away just weeks before graduation. His young daughter was present to accept his certificate in his stead.
The Top Achiever awards went to the following students:
- Swiss Re Top Performer Award – Lebo Mokoena
- Fulcrum Future Leader Award – Thuli Makwala. Prizemoney for both these awards have kindly been sponsored by Fulcrum.
- Special mention for leadership skills went to Aaron Mrabalala

Roots and Wings Mentorship Programme
Next on the agenda, was the graduation ceremony for the Roots and Wings Mentorship programme. Once again, the Roots and Wings mentees were addressed by our President, Carla Jordan, and soon after were called to the stage to receive their certificates. It was a proud moment for the mentors who had walked the journey with their mentees, but an especially proud moment for the mentees themselves.

- Shannon-Lee Pires + Asiya Swaleh

IIG Academic Programme
The 3rd group to graduate on this momentous occasion was our newest and exciting addition to our education prgrammes, the IIG Academic Programme. This programme has taken 15 school leavers from disadvantaged backgrounds, through an intensive learning programme which has done well to equip them for the working world. All the learners have done exceptionally well on this programme, and we are proud to announce that they have all received employment opportunities within our industry.
Top achiever wards went to the following students:
- Anele Nombanda – Average: 81% – to receive R5000 cash – GIFS will be providing a cheque to be handed out at the event
- Phumza Bacela – Average: 80% – to receive R2000 cash – GIFS will be providing a cheque to be handed out at the event
- Nontuthuzelo Ntwana – Average: 77% – to receive R2000 cash – GIFS will be providing a cheque to be handed out at the event
- Nontuthuzelo Ntwana – voucher for R1500 for the highest attendance rate from Emerald – voucher to be provided by Emerald

ILDP Programme
The last group to graduate on this special day were the students from the GIBS ILDP programme.
In its fourth year of running, the ILDP concluded successfully with 24 graduates. The programme is run in partnership with Sasria SOC Limited and GIBS in order to respond to the skills challenge within the short-term insurance industry, particularly the challenges around historically disadvantaged individuals at medium-senior management level. Having completed this intensive education programme, the ILDP delegates were overjoyed after graduating.
The Top Achiever awards went to the following students:
- First place Place – Yolandi Rex
- Second Place – Lerato Sello
- Top ALP (Action Learning Project) Group: Simonson Ralebitso, Mmule Mosalo, Mmakopa Mosalo, Nonisiwe Makhonjwa, Tinyiko Ngobeni, Raksha Ramcharan.
