Being part of the Roots & Wings Mentorship Programme as a first-time mentor has been both a humbling and rewarding experience. From the outset, I approached this journey with the intention to guide and support but what I’ve come to realize is that mentorship is far from one-directional.
My mentee, Tyler Ganesh from HIC Underwriting Managers (Pty) Ltd, has brought a refreshing perspective to the process. Although we’ve only met twice since the programme began, each interaction has been meaningful and impactful. There’s a natural synergy between us, driven by our shared passions not only for the insurance industry but also for cars. Being car enthusiasts has given us an easy point of connection, allowing our conversations to flow beyond formal mentorship and into genuine engagement.
Our discussions have touched on career growth, navigating the insurance landscape, and personal development. What stands out for me is Tyler’s curiosity and willingness to learn. At the same time, he brings his own insights and experiences to the table, which has challenged me to reflect and grow as well. It’s a reminder that mentorship is not about having all the answers, but about creating a space where both individuals can learn from each other.
As a first-year mentor, I’ve found this experience particularly grounding. It has reinforced the importance of listening, being present, and offering guidance that is both practical and relatable. Tyler has shared that he finds value in our conversations, and that affirmation has been encouraging. Knowing that I can contribute, even in a small way, to someone else’s professional journey is incredibly fulfilling.
What makes this mentorship truly special is the mutual respect and openness we’ve established in such a short time. It’s not about the number of meetings, but the quality of engagement within them. I look forward to building on this foundation as the programme progresses deepening our discussions, setting meaningful goals, and continuing to learn from one another.
Ultimately, this journey has shown me that mentorship is as much about growth for the mentor as it is for the mentee. And in Tyler, I see not only a driven young professional, but also a reminder of why initiatives like Roots & Wings matter they connect people, spark growth, and create lasting impact.
