Light Bulb Legends – Our name came to represent the many “light bulb moments” we experienced together.
My journey on the programme is more than an academic experience. It has been one of reflection, discomfort, growth, and connection. The programme encouraged me to pause and examine how I show up, respond to pressure, receive feedback, and contribute to the development of others.
One of the most meaningful aspects was being a member of the Light Bulb Legends. Our name came to represent the many “light bulb moments” we experienced together. Some insights emerged during formal sessions, while others developed through group discussions, honest feedback, disagreements, laughter, and shared reflection.
Our Action Learning journey taught me that learning does not happen through theory alone. It also takes place when people with different experiences, personalities, and ways of thinking work towards a shared goal. Initially, working together felt easy. However, as the workload and pressure increased, our differences became more noticeable. Some members wanted to move quickly, while others preferred to analyze and question our direction. This different communication, and working styles sometimes created frustration, misunderstanding, and tension.
While challenging, these differences became one of our greatest learning opportunities. The group gave me practical lessons in emotional intelligence, patience, inclusive leadership, and collaboration. I realized that effective teamwork does not require everyone to think or work in the same way. Instead, it requires enough trust for people to disagree respectfully, express their perspectives honestly, and remain committed to a common purpose.
The process also challenged me to consider my contribution to the group dynamic. It was easy to identify what others could have done differently, but it was more difficult to examine my own reactions, expectations, and communication. I had to ask myself whether I was truly listening or simply waiting to respond, and whether I was creating enough space for perspectives different from my own.
There were storms along the way, but we tried not to leave difficult moments unresolved. We returned to challenging conversations, reflected on what had happened, and worked towards common ground. This taught me that conflict does not necessarily mean that a team is failing. When handled with honesty, respect, and maturity, it can strengthen relationships and improve the outcome.
Feedback was another valuable part of the experience. It highlighted the importance of managing time, focusing on relevant information, and communicating our ideas clearly. Although feedback could be uncomfortable, I learned to view it not as criticism, but as an opportunity to gain experience.
Through this experience, my understanding of leadership has evolved. I have learned that leadership is not about having all the answers or controlling every outcome. It is about listening with curiosity, remaining present during discomfort, valuing different perspectives, and helping people move forward together.
As I reflect on the programme, I value both the knowledge I gained and the people with whom I shared the experience. Our differences sometimes tested us, but they also stretched our thinking and strengthened our ability to collaborate. The journey has made me more self-aware, patient, and intentional. Most importantly, it reminded me that the greatest light bulb moments often occur when we allow ourselves to learn from discomfort, difference, and one another.
