Simphiwe Mtyali
After being co-opted in 2018 as a council member Simphiwe Mtyali knew that she has made the right decision by running to be on the IIG council. Her need to share and multiply her story motivated her to run again in 2019 when she was officially appointed to the IIG Impact and Transformation portfolio.
She is currently the Africa Executive at MIRB Africa. Her role involves marketing and reinsurance placement for MIRB’s African portfolio. As one of the founding members of MIRB Africa, she is proud to witness the strides the company has achieved since its establishment in South Africa five years ago. “Our team is not only being recognized as one of the best servicing and technical brokers in the market, but our company is also becoming a place where people want to come and work.”
Simphiwe is a real-life example of the positive contribution made by the insurance and reinsurance industry to greater South Africa. Born from a township in Ekurhuleni, Simphiwe is now well travelled (going onto her third passport before the age of 35) and is evolving into a hybrid reinsurance broker, well versed in both facultative and treaty reinsurance. She holds three degrees, one of which is a Masters in Business Administration. “Empowerment and opportunity exists in our industry. As young people we need to work to position ourselves where we can gain access to these opportunities”
Simphiwe is an advocate of exercising regularly, “Not only does it enable me to maintain mental and physical health, but it has also broadened my social circle.”
Thabo Twalo
Thabo Twalo joined the IIG council at the beginning of 2019 as part of the Transformation and Impact portfolio
He is currently the Head of Underwriting: Property at Munich Re of Africa. He joined Munich Re in 2008 as a treaty underwriter and in his time in Munich Re he has held several positions including the role of underwriting manager in the Mauritius branch, a position he held for 13 months before returning to his home country of South Africa.
Prior to joining Munich Re he worked for Swiss Re, who he joined straight after completing his Bachelor of Economic Sciences degree at WITS
“I was born and raised in reinsurance…” he likes to say and he has accumulated over 18 years of experience in the reinsurance industry. He cites the opportunity to see the world as one of the reasons he chooses to stay in the reinsurance industry. “My work has taken me to all parts of Africa, Europe and Asia. I love travelling, especially getting to know the different world cultures. Amazingly you learn so much about yourself from interacting with people from a different background…”
He has a love for the South African insurance industry and is passionate about driving transformation within the industry.
“Transformation is not just about demographics but it is also about changing the skills profile of the industry. Practices in insurance have changed since the time I joined and they are set to change even further going forward. Technology, digitization & cyber make up the new risk landscape. To remain relevant as an industry we have to attract, develop and retain skills that are aligned to the new risk environment”.
