When I joined the Roots and Wings mentorship programme, I hoped to gain guidance from someone with experience in the insurance industry. What I did not expect was how much the journey would influence not only my career, but also my confidence, mindset, and outlook on the future.
I had my first mentorship session with Clyde Troup in March, and it has been a truly meaningful experience. From our first conversation, Clyde created a space where I could reflect on who I am, where I have been, and where I want to go. We worked through exercises such as the Wheel of Self-Care, Wheel of Life, my achievements, my skills, and a gratitude journal. These activities encouraged me to look beyond my current role and recognise the growth, strengths, and experiences that have shaped me.
One of the highlights of this journey has been Clyde’s willingness to share his knowledge and experiences openly. Our discussions go far beyond technical insurance topics. He provides career guidance, shares personal lessons from his own professional journey, discusses financial planning, recommends books and industry resources, and continuously challenges me to think differently about my future.
A key lesson I have taken from Clyde is the importance of taking ownership of my career. He has encouraged me to build my personal brand, become more visible within the insurance industry, invest in professional relationships, and actively seek opportunities for growth. His advice has reminded me that qualifications are important, but experience, networking, confidence, and the value we create are equally essential.
This mentorship journey has also been a reminder of the importance of continuous learning. After completing my CII Diploma, a significant personal milestone after overcoming previous academic challenges, Clyde encouraged me to continue developing myself and to never stop looking for opportunities to grow.
Perhaps the greatest impact of this mentorship has been the renewed sense of hope and motivation it has given me. There were moments where I felt uncertain about my career path, but after each conversation with Clyde, I leave feeling encouraged, positive, and reminded of my own potential.
Roots and Wings has shown me that mentorship is not only about receiving advice; it is about having someone who challenges you, believes in your abilities, and helps you see possibilities that you may not have considered before.
I am incredibly grateful to Clyde Troup for his guidance, encouragement, and willingness to invest in my growth. I also appreciate the IIG for creating a platform that connects young professionals with experienced industry leaders.
As I continue my journey in insurance and reinsurance, I carry with me the lessons learned through this programme: to keep learning, build meaningful relationships, know my value, and always have the courage to grow my wings.
