On 4 September, Leaderex 2018 was held at the Sandton Convention Centre and hosted an impressive 250 masterclasses led by 500 speakers. Organised by Leader.co.za, in association with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), the annual event brings together business leaders, professionals and entrepreneurs providing insights into issues and trends that impact their lives.
<Amongst these sessions, the InsurTech Forum was focused on driving digital transformation and who better to MC the InsurTech session than our very own IIG president, Daniel Stevens. The countries top thought leaders unpacked these major digital trends transforming the insurance industry, including new models, micro and on-demand insurance, product and distribution innovation, digitisation, AI, Datascience, Chatbots and Legislation.
Jonathan Walker, founder and CTO of Granadilla was the first person to take to stage, setting the scene by giving an overview of the Rise of Insurtech. The panel that followed, consisted of Dominique Collett (RMI), Avi Naidoo (Fo-sho), Brad Todd Smith (JaSure) as well as Nkazi Sokhulu (Yalua SA), and addressed local issues with their discussion on the major InsurTech trends transforming the South African insurance industry.
Up next was the co-founder of the app-driven car insurance provider, Naked Insurance. Alex Thomson had delegates intrigued with his insights into the use of data science and AI in insurance, a practice he believes is radically changing the way the industry is currently doing business.
Other talks included: the digitisation of product distribution by Nicola Faurie (Click2Sure); chatbots and automation by Sihle Zingu (Nedbank Insurance) and the legal implications and risks of Insurtech by Caroline Theodosiou, who left delegates pondering about various liability implications.
The masterclass sessions were ended off by the CEO of BroLink, Howard John, who gave a glimpse into the future of insurance.</p>
<p>Our IIG president did a sterling job in keeping the conversation going throughout the afternoon, making the InsurTech session a valuable one to attend.
