Roots and Wings International: Mentorship That Helps Our Industry Soar

As we step into the final quarter of 2025, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the milestones of the year. Among the many successes the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG) can proudly celebrate, the Roots and Wings International mentorship programme stands out as a shining example of collaboration, growth, and the power of human connection.

Launched in 2016 under the presidency of Tracy McLaughlin, the IIG mentorship programme known as Roots and Wings programme began modestly, pairing just nine mentors and mentees. Since then, it has steadily grown into one of the IIG’s flagship initiatives, with an impact that now stretches far beyond South Africa’s borders. In 2023, the programme evolved into Roots and Wings International, expanding to include mentees from Zimbabwe, Ghana, Mozambique, Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, and Uganda. This bold step signalled a new era, cementing its role as a platform that nurtures talent across Africa and, soon, across continents.

At the heart of the programme are facilitators Linda Coetzee and Associates (LCA). Since its inception, Linda and Jenna have poured their passion into pairing mentors and mentees in ways that unlock potential. The matching process is not random; it considers personalities, strengths, and growth opportunities, ensuring partnerships that bring out the best in both sides.

This year, six mentor–mentee pairs embarked on the nine-month journey. Quarterly online reviews and reflective sessions create opportunities to pause, learn, and measure growth, culminating in a year-end presentation where mentees share their experiences. These final presentations are often described as the most moving aspect of the programme, as mentees take the stage to reflect on how mentorship has shaped their personal and professional journeys.

Interestingly, many mentees join the programme expecting technical guidance, perhaps tips on underwriting, risk management, or leadership skills. Instead, they find so much more: a cheerleader, a confidant, and a guide who not only believes in their abilities but walks alongside them through life’s challenges. The value lies not only in career development, but in the confidence, resilience, and self-belief that emerge from these relationships.

Mentors, too, share a deep sense of fulfilment. For them, the reward is in giving back, using their life experiences to guide those at the beginning of their journeys. Several mentors take on dual roles, serving both the local and international programmes. Their dedication often goes beyond virtual calls, with some making special trips, travelling hundreds of kilometres to connect in person with their mentees, demonstrating the genuine care that fuels the programme’s success.

Looking ahead, 2026 promises even greater horizons. Plans are already underway to welcome delegates from the UK and India, broadening the programme’s reach across oceans. This next step reflects the growing momentum of Roots and Wings International and the demand for meaningful mentorship experiences in our industry worldwide.

Having served as a mentor myself, I can attest that the end-of-year presentations are nothing short of heartwarming. Each mentee’s journey is unique, but a common theme emerges: the programme gives them direction, confidence, and perhaps most importantly, someone who truly believes in them. With those wings, they find the courage to fly.

The steady growth of the programme each year is a testament to its value and the dedication of everyone involved. To our mentors and mentees, we extend deep gratitude for your commitment and spirit. Together, you are not only shaping careers but also creating a legacy of support, trust, and shared success.

As Roots and Wings International continues to grow in strength and reach, one truth remains constant: mentorship is more than guidance, it is belief in another person’s potential. And when that belief takes root, wings inevitably follow.
