The IIG’s inaugural dinner: ShowUp!

The Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG) held its inaugural dinner at The Indaba Hotel in Fourways on 17 March 2022. The first glittering event of the year saw immediate past president Tshepiso Chocho handing over the reins to president elect, Thabo Twalo, who received the presidential chain of honour from Nico Conradie, CEO of Munich Re.

Thabo’s acceptance speech honoured the past presidents of the IIG and, as the 111th president, he said, “I pledge to carry the legacy of this great organisation with pride, purpose and a little swag.” He introduced the exco and councillors for 2022, whose portfolios can be viewed on #YourIIG’s website on the link https://iig.co.za/iig-office/

IIG Deputy President, Simphiwe Mtyali, received recognition as Councillor of the Year for 2021.

“If we talk about industry transformation, then our impact has to go beyond our individual organisations. We as the IIG are here to multiply your efforts, to connect you with likeminded organisations that wish to see the industry grow. Engage with us!” said Thabo. “The whole team makes the magic happen in our very full calendar. This year, we have the biggest team ever as our programmes and events are growing every year. Arguably the most exciting of these is IIG International – the ultimate networking and educational tour.” Watch the destination launch on this link – youtu.be/wxh-oE5uQBo. Bookings are now open, and can be done via e-mail through info@iig.co.za

Thabo also thanked MC, Nonnie Mhlungu “for bringing style and grace to the proceedings this evening.”

Thabo mentioned that connecting people is crucial for organisational and people development and that a wonderful array of events will facilitate these connections namely the 80th Annual Dinner in November as well as two Golf days and two Night Golf, CEO Roundtable and Broker Leadership Forum. Thabo also mentioned a new initiative, Human Capital Leaders Roundtable, will be added “where the human resource leaders can tackle the common employee challenges that face the industry.”

He also spoke of The Academic Programme offered via GIFS and The ILDP Programme offered via Heneley Business School which have a variety of courses that are relevant to the entire employee journey. Some of the developmental programmes can be seen here – https://iig.co.za/education

The inaugural dinner was a tremendous success and introduced the IIG’s theme for the year – “#ShowUp” – in fine style. Thabo stated that “One of the key pillars of the IIG is affiliation. We want everyone here to be proud to be part of this industry, and those outside to aspire to be in it.”

The event’s main sponsors were Santam, Bryte, Discovery, Sasria, Emerald, Marsh, Hollard, Old Mutual Insure. Charter Risk was a contributing sponsor. Activation stands included Marsh’s welcome area, Emerald’s photobooths and Discovery Insure’s networking lounges, guests received gifts courtesy of Santam.

As the IIG, we are excited about what the year ahead holds for the industry as we continue to facilitate a platform for professionals to Engage, Connect and Grow!
