The IIG is recognised for its impactful programmes and initiatives. Among them, the Roots and Wings Mentorship Programme stands out as a favourite—both for many in the industry and, if I’m being honest, for me as well. It was truly an honour to be appointed as an IIG ambassador for a second year, and an even greater privilege to serve as custodian of this incredible programme, led by the dynamic duo of Jenna and Linda Coetzee.
Launched in 2016 under the presidency of Tracy McLaughlin, the programme initially paired nine mentors with nine mentees. Fast forward to 2025, and at this year’s launch in January, we welcomed thirty-nine mentors and thirty-nine mentees—a testament to its growing impact. Since its inception, a total of 230 mentees have completed the programme. Many of these individuals have since soared in their careers and are now returning as mentors, paying it forward to the next generation.
In 2023, this already exceptional programme reached another milestone, expanding beyond borders to launch the Roots and Wings International Programme. Delivered online, this initiative now supports 18 international mentees, further extending its reach and influence.
Both Roots and Wings and the Class of Programmes are guided by the incredibly talented Linda and Jenna Coetzee, whose passion for people is evident from the very first interaction. We often marvel at the magic they weave when pairing mentors and mentees, but time and time again, their intuitive matchmaking proves spot on. The results speak for themselves, particularly at the end-of-year presentations, where the profound impact of these mentorships is on full display. Having attended the past four presentations, I can confidently say that the growth and transformation showcased each year are nothing short of inspiring.
Serving as a mentor for the past four years, I can say with certainty that mentorship is a two-way street. Each mentee I have worked with has taught me something new, inspired me, and even helped me reconnect with the younger version of myself—the one eager to learn, take risks, and embrace challenges. Being a mentor reminded me that leading by example is essential. I couldn’t encourage my mentees to take bold steps and push past their fears if I wasn’t willing to do the same.
Like many, when I first volunteered to be a mentor, I questioned the value I could bring and how I could truly shape someone’s journey in just a year. What I discovered was simple yet profound: mentorship isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about truly seeing another person and helping them recognise their potential. That, in itself, is a powerful gift.
If you’ve ever considered becoming a mentor, I encourage you to take that step. Join this extraordinary programme, help spread more wings, and in the process, grow deeper roots.
My experience with mentorship is best captured by this timeless quote:
“You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him discover it within himself.” — Galileo Galilei
