When people think of assessors or technical claims professionals, they often picture a man in a reflective vest, walking through a damaged property or inspecting a vehicle. As a woman and a Claims Manager, I see that image far too often — not just in people’s minds, but in our day-to-day reality.
Claims, especially in the assessing and technical space, is still very much male-dominated. But slowly, we’re changing that.
Our Voices Matter Here Too
I’ve worked with outstanding men in this industry — many who’ve taught me, supported me, and challenged me to grow. But I’ve also had moments where I had to prove my knowledge just a little bit more, hold my ground a little bit firmer, or speak a little bit louder to be taken seriously.
And I know I’m not alone.
Women bring something powerful to this space: empathy, intuition, attention to detail, and the ability to lead with both strength and compassion. These are not “soft” skills — they are essential skills in the world of claims, where we deal with people’s lives, losses, and livelihoods.
Representation Matters
One of the best parts of my role as a Claims Manager is seeing more women enter this space — and not just enter, but thrive. They’re leading investigations, managing complex claims, and making tough decisions with confidence and care.
But we still need more. And for that to happen, we must make space: space in our teams, space in our training programmes, space in how we think about what “technical” really means.
Because technical skill doesn’t belong to one gender. It belongs to those who are willing to learn, grow, and show up — day after day.
To the Next Generation
If you’re a young woman looking at the world of insurance, I want you to look at claims too. Don’t be put off by what you don’t see yet — become the example you wish was there.
We need you. The industry needs you. And as someone who’s walked this path, I promise: you belong here.
