The journey of the IIG Class of 2026 so far has been one defined by growth, self-discovery, and the gradual realisation of the power each individual holds. What began as a group of individuals stepping into something unfamiliar has quickly evolved into a collective of strong, capable, and driven people, each bringing their own unique energy and potential to the experience.
From the very beginning, it became clear that this was not just another programme. Each individual in the IIG Class of 2026 is a powerful force in their own right, filled with potential that is often not fully recognised at first. Through our first session, we started to uncover not only our strengths, but also the depth of what we are capable of achieving.
These class sessions will play a significant role in helping us become more aware of the power we hold, both individually and together.
Personally, the journey started with uncertainty. When I first signed up for IIG Class of 2026, I was nervous and unsure whether I was truly ready to step into this space. I remember having conversations with Tyrelle Correa (IIG Deputy President), who encouraged me to take the leap and trust the process. That encouragement became a turning point, helping me move past my hesitation and commit fully to the experience.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Santam Construction and Engineering for their support and for the opportunity to be part of the IIG Class of 2026.
One of my earliest moments of growth came during our first team engagement outside of the office. Walking into that space, I felt a sense of nervousness. However, as I looked around at my team Vuka Vanguard, something shifted. I realised that I was surrounded by individuals who were not only capable but determined. In that moment, I knew Vuka Vanguard was a force to be reckoned with. That realisation brought a sense of reassurance and pride, reminding me that I was part of something bigger than myself.
As we progressed into our first-class sessions, the experience became even more meaningful. These sessions allowed us to move beyond surface-level interactions and truly begin to understand one another. I started to see where different team members thrived and where they struggled. This deeper understanding fostered stronger connections and mutual respect, while also highlighting the importance of empathy and awareness when working as part of a team.
A key milestone in our journey has been the preparation for our first event, the Presidential Golf Day. Planning this event has been both exciting and challenging. It has tested our ability to work under pressure, manage responsibilities, and remain aligned as a team. At times, the process has been demanding, with multiple ideas, deadlines, and expectations to balance. However, it is under this pressure that some of the most valuable lessons have emerged.
One of the most important lessons for me has been the importance of truly listening. In a group filled with strong individuals and diverse perspectives, it is easy to focus on pushing your own ideas forward. This experience has shown me that real progress comes from hearing everyone out and valuing each contribution. Every idea carries weight, and often the strongest outcomes emerge when different viewpoints are brought together.
I have also learned how important it is to understand and work with different personalities. Each team member responds differently to communication, feedback, and responsibility. Learning how to engage with each person in a way that resonates with them has been essential to building a strong and effective team. This has required patience, adaptability, and a willingness to step outside of my usual ways of thinking and communicating.
The golf day represents more than just a task to be completed. It reflects our journey so far. The effort, the challenges, the growth, and the collaboration. It is a moment where everything we have been learning so far comes together in a practical and meaningful way.
Looking at the IIG Class of 2026 now, there is a clear shift from where we started. Initial uncertainty has begun to transform into confidence, and individuals who once stood separately are now connected by a shared vision. Each person continues to grow into their potential, and as a group, we are becoming stronger with every experience.
This journey so far has reminded me that growth does not happen in isolation. It happens through interaction, challenge, and a willingness to learn from one another. It has also shown me that sometimes all it takes is a bit of encouragement to step into something that has the power to shape you in unexpected and impactful ways.
As we approach the golf day, there is a strong sense of anticipation and pride. Regardless of the outcome, the journey leading up to it has already been a success. It has revealed the strength of our team, the potential within each individual, and the true impact of aspiring together.
The IIG Class of 2026 is not just a group of students; it is a group of individuals discovering their power, learning to trust one another, and building something meaningful together. And this is only the beginning.
