The 2026 Inaugural Dinner of the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG), hosted in March at The Galleria in Sandton, felt less like a formal milestone and more like a meaningful beginning, an evening focused on where the industry is going, not just where it has been. The evening presented an opportunity to connect, engage and celebrate the people and partnerships that continue to shape our industry.
From the moment the doors opened, guests understood this was not business as usual. The theme – Black and White with a Touch of Chess – was executed with breathtaking precision. The ballroom resembled a living chessboard with crisp contrasts, elegant décor, and subtle chess-inspired elements woven throughout the experience. More than just a visual theme, the concept of chess became a fitting metaphor for the evening. Conversations naturally turned to strategy, foresight, and the importance of thinking beyond the immediate move, a sentiment that resonates strongly within the insurance industry.
The evening’s formal proceedings began with a moment of genuine gravitas: the leadership handover. Outgoing President, Wilmine Prinsloo addressed the audience for the last time in an official capacity. Her reflections were both warm and honest, reflecting on a year that was #2025&Alive. When asked what words of wisdom she has for the incoming president, she shared: “I have all the confidence that Jabu is going to do great and 2026 is going to an exciting year!”
Then, with a symbolic passing of the ceremonial gavel, she officially handed over the reins to the evening’s star: incoming President Jabulile Mtimkulu.
If there was any doubt about the future of the Institute, Jabulile’s inaugural address erased it. She is a leader who commands a room not with volume, but with precision. Drawing from her tenure within the IIG, she spoke about her growth from being in the IIG programmes, to where she finds herself now as the president. “I gave thanks to the many who paved my way, including family, friends and industry giants.” she said to rapt applause.
Her theme for 2026 #AspireTogether is inspired by the well-known African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Another stand out moment of the evening, was the announcement of the Insurance Institute of Gauteng Council Member of the Year 2025.
The room filled with anticipation, as Wilmine Prinsloo announced Linroy Peters as the recipient. The response was immediate and well-deserved. Linroy’s contribution to the IIG extends beyond responsibility, it reflects dedication, consistency, and a genuine commitment to making a positive impact within the industry. As the evening transitioned into celebration, it also created space for reflection.
2025 marked my first year on the IIG Council, and Wilmine was the first President I had the privilege of working alongside. Her leadership focused on long-term impact and sustainability, laying a strong foundation for the future of the Institute.
If 2026 is a chess match for the insurance industry, Gauteng just made its most powerful opening move yet. The board is set, now we play.
