Daphne Peter – Head: IIG Education Portfolio
Daphne joined the insurance industry in 1981 and the experience has been so fulfilling, inspiring and rewarding, that she cannot see herself outside of insurance. Daphne started her career at Robert Enthoven Insurance Brokers and worked across various disciplines and companies before becoming a technical corporate broker, a role that she fulfilled for 22 years. In 2005 she joined Hollard and currently heads up the Hollard Risk Finance area.
Daphne joined the IIG Council in 2017 as a co-opted member, in 2018 she joined the education portfolio as a full council member and 2019 sees her as Head of the Education Portfolio. Throughout her career Daphne has been mentored by what she believes are the most highly skilled individuals in the industry, all of whom have enriched her knowledge of insurance and contributed to her career positively. For this reason, she joined the IIG and is very excited to use her time, skill and knowledge to give back to the industry through this very important role.
Having been involved in the insurance industry for 38 years Daphne is passionate about education and making sure we develop the required skills our industry needs to thrive and create positive change.
In her spare time Daphne enjoys reading and paper crafting.
Tshepiso Chocho – Council member
Tshepiso Chocho joined Sasria SOC Ltd in 2015 and was appointed into her current role in February 2019 as the Executive Manager of People Management. Her areas of responsibility include Human Capital, CSI and Facilities. The passion that she has for people helps her find meaning and purpose every day. Tshepiso is most passionate about bringing the issues of people and transformation to the table and invoking debate and discussion. Tshepiso has mainly worked in Human Resources however most of her career was in the Insurance Sector. Tshepiso holds a BA Degree in Humanities, and an Honours degree in Industrial Psychology.
She joined the IIG Council in 2019 and is a member of the Education Portfolio. In this position she aims to continue to promote matters of transformation and help put more young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in good quality programmes that will make an impact to their families and communities.
Keshrie Pillay – Co-opted council member
Keshrie Pillay is the Manager of Off-License Solutions at Nedbank Insurance. In her role, Keshrie heads up the partnership model for Nedbank Insurance where she is responsible for identifying opportunities to build the Nedbank Insurance brand. She does this through the creation of mutually beneficial relationships to all stakeholders in the Nedbank Insurance Product Value Chain.
Keshrie holds a B Comm degree specializing in Accounting and Finance, and has achieved a leadership Post Graduate qualification from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).
Her career commenced at First Bowring Insurance Brokers, fulfilling the roles of Claims broker and High Networth Relationship Manager – this allowed her to experience clients first hand, and thus ignited her passion to understand clients and their insurance needs.
Her move to Nedbank Insurance, saw her utilize the technical skills gained to create a product strategy to ensure Nedbank Insurance is equipped with best of breed products and partners, constantly striving for Client Excellence.
Her successes thus far include the rewrite of the flagship Nedbank HOC product. In 2018, Keshrie and her GIBS syndicate attained top honours for their research conducted on Microinsurance and creating a working Microinsurance model to provide a short-term insurance solution to the currently under-served, low-income customer segment.
The drive to make the insurance industry more accessible to new entrants into the market was a key motivating factor for her to join the IIG council on the Education portfolio. Her mandate includes; the hosting of the IIG Insights sessions during the year, provides mentorship to several graduates on the IIG Academic programme and represents the council at industry events.
Asiya Swaleh – Ambassadorial member
Asiya (fondly known as Archie), currently holds the position of Senior Account Executive at Insure Group Managers Ltd, previously reporting directly to the CEO. This position influenced her move to Gauteng from KZN. She is responsible for managing and maintaining stakeholder relationships, new business development as well as the training of internal staff on process and procedures.
After returning to South Africa from the UK where she served as Key Account Manager for Hugo Boss and thereafter Yves Saint Laurent, Asiya began her Insurance career in Life as a Financial Advisor at Liberty Life in KZN. She then moved into short term insurance where she held the positions of Portfolio Manager & Client Relationship Manager at New National Assurance and Lion of Africa Insurance Companies respectively. She holds a licentiate membership at IISA and currently serves as an Ambassador at IIG on the Education Portfolio. She has also been serving successfully as a Mentor on the IIG Roots & Wings Mentorship programme over the last two years. Alignment to assisting in education and empowerment of women and young people in our industry is always high on her agenda.
Asiya holds an Honours Degree in Fine Art which led to her living and working in Switzerland where she represented South Africa at the PalExpo in Geneva. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Durban-Westville. She completed her Insurance Diploma through Milpark Business School and Wealth Management certification through the University of Stellenbosch Business School.
On a personal note, Asiya comes from a close-knit family of Afghan descent. She enjoys international travel, extreme sport which include bungee jumping, shark-cage diving, skydiving and is a trained Archer. Her wish-list includes climbing Mount Kilimanjaro & hoping to reach base camp at Everest (still trying to realise this dream). She also considers herself a foodie & coffee aficionado. She has an avid interest in social media and uses it as an effective business tool. Her other obsessions include all things Formula 1 and cites Daniel Ricciardo as her favourite driver.
