On the 15th of January, the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG) conducted interviews with over 40 enthusiastic and talented young South Africans eager to join the IIG Academic Programme in 2024. The day-long process saw judges engaging with applicants from diverse backgrounds, each bringing a unique set of skills and aspirations to the table.
Representing different disadvantaged communities, these young individuals showcased their determination and commitment to securing a place in the IIG Academic Programme. The judges were impressed by the quality of the applicants, each embodying the potential to excel in the world of insurance.
The overwhelming response and caliber of candidates necessitated an additional day for the judges to meticulously review CVs and academic qualifications. This thorough evaluation was crucial to ensure that the final selection of 17 students truly reflected the values and goals of the IIG Academic Programme.
In a groundbreaking initiative, the IIG is addressing the pressing need to upskill South African youth who find themselves unemployed. The Graduate Institute of Financial Sciences (GIFS) has collaborated with the IIG to design a Short-Term Insurance course. This course aims to equip young individuals with essential skills, preparing them for a successful entry into the workforce.
The yearlong course includes a comprehensive 3-day workshop facilitated by a world-of-work expert, offering valuable insights and practical knowledge. Moreover, participants will benefit from specialised coaching throughout the year, ensuring their continuous growth and development.
Recognizing the importance of mentorship in career development, the IIG is calling on professionals within the insurance industry to volunteer as mentors. This initiative aims to provide the selected students with guidance, support, and industry insights, making their learning journey both meaningful and enriching. By investing in the education and development of these young minds, the IIG is not only creating opportunities for individual success but also actively contributing to the betterment of the country.
As the selected 17 students embark on this transformative journey, the IIG wishes them the very best for the year ahead. Their success will undoubtedly shape the future of the insurance industry, and the IIG eagerly anticipates the positive impact they will make in the broader professional landscape. Thank you to all the applicants for their enthusiasm and commitment to learning, and to the mentors who will play a vital role in shaping the next generation of industry leaders. Together, we are building a brighter future for South Africa.
