For many school leavers, entering the professional world can be both exciting and challenging. Choosing a programme that offers practical skills, recognised qualifications, and career opportunities is an important step toward long-term success. This Academic Programme has been designed to equip young individuals with the knowledge, confidence, and workplace readiness needed to build rewarding careers within the financial services industry.

Aimed specifically at school leavers, the programme is aligned to the National Certificate in Short-Term Insurance (NQF Level 5), ensuring learners receive nationally recognised and industry-relevant training. The programme carries a minimum of 120 credits and provides a solid foundation for those looking to enter the insurance sector.
The programme is delivered in partnership with ApexU, a leading South African provider of SETA and QCTO-aligned training programmes. ApexU is known for its customised and industry-focused learning solutions that combine academic excellence with practical workplace preparation. Through experienced facilitators and innovative learning methods, learners are supported both academically and professionally.
In addition to the formal curriculum, the programme includes work-readiness workshops.
Learners develop essential workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism, interview preparation, and career planning.
Throughout the 12-month programme, learners gain a comprehensive understanding of the Short-Term Insurance industry and its role within the broader financial services sector. They develop communication skills and apply mathematical literacy in financial services environments while gaining insight into current affairs and their impact on the insurance industry.
The programme also places strong emphasis on workplace ethics and legal compliance, equipping learners to understand risks, liabilities, and responsible workplace conduct. Learners further develop personal finance management skills that support informed financial decision-making.
The curriculum provides detailed knowledge of Short-Term Insurance products for both personal and commercial lines. Additional modules include insurable risks, contract law within Short-Term Insurance, and information systems relevant to the sector.
A key benefit of the programme is its strong employment focus. Upon successful completion, learners are supported through job placement opportunities. This year, Old Mutual Insure will absorb 100% of the graduating learners into its working environment, creating valuable opportunities for career growth and industry experience.
This programme offers school leavers more than just a qualification — it provides a strong foundation for professional success, practical workplace experience, and long-term career growth within the dynamic Short-Term Insurance industry.
Programs like this are not possible without the continuous support of phenomenal sponsors, thank you to GICRe for their partnership and full sponsorship of this IIG Academic Programme 2026
