Meet the IIG Finance Team

The IIG Finance team together with the IIG Exco have undoubtedly one of the most important roles; the team which consists of Carla and Nonte plays a vital part of the Institution which includes maintaining accurate and complete financial records, preparing meaningful financial statements, helping stakeholders understand the finances, budgeting, and safeguarding assets to name a few. Let’s meet our team:

Carla is an Executive Director and the Chief Financial Officer of Emerald Risk Transfer.  Having over 20 years of experience within the fields of both insurance and reinsurance, she brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience and has played a pivotal role in the evolution of Emerald to a mature organisation with processes and procedures of global standards, an expansive brand presence, and international best practice financial reporting procedures and controls.  As the 2019 President of the Insurance Institute of Gauteng, and with seven years of service to the institute, she has also had the pleasure of being involved in a number of industry-wide transformation and development initiatives, and education programmes.  Carla strongly believes in empowering and motivating people to be the best versions of themselves and is a supportive and purpose-driven leader.  She is also a co-founder of Gauteng Women in Insurance, is passionate about the empowerment of women in business, and is dedicated to the pursuit of equality, both in the workplace and the boardroom.  Carla enjoys exploring new places through travel, is an avid runner, and enjoys spending her free time being active and outdoors with her son, Kian.

Nonte joined the finance team of the IIG Council earlier this year. Her role includes budgeting, investments and managing of funds such that the organisation’s liquidity and solvency remain strong. Nonte assists the IIG Council to analyse and interpret the financial state of each IIG event and educational program.

Nonte has been in the short-term insurance industry for 13 years. She fell in love with the industry from day one. Everyone who has worked closely with her is impressed by her problem-solving skills, analytical skills, and attention to detail. Those skills have resulted in excellence in everything she does.

This was later confirmed by getting the top achiever award for ILDP 2020 and her syndicate team getting the top group award. This was also proof of how hard she works at anything she commits to.

Nonte has been working in finance for 18 years. Her first job after university was articles at KPMG for three years and she stayed a further 18 months as a full-time employee. She then entered the short-term insurance industry straight after that. If you are looking for accurate financial information, including taxation matters, budgeting, and forecasting, she is your lady. Nonte has always been in love with numbers. Throughout school, she had the honour of representing her school, sometimes her region, at the Mathematics Olympiads.

Currently, she heads the financial reporting division at Emerald Risk Transfer. Nonte is responsible for reporting to their holding company monthly, quarterly forecasting and budgeting, statutory annual financial statements, tax (income tax and VAT) and liaising with both internal and external auditors. Also, Nonte has been recently nominated and voted into the Emerald Pension Fund Joint Forum as one of the employee representatives. A Joint Forum is often referred to as the “local board of trustees” of an employer who participates in an Umbrella Fund.

Nonte loves spending time with her family, hiking and reading. Her passion for good food has inspired her to explore different cuisines and different restaurants. “Every time the President announces new lockdown rules, my first concern is the ability to eat at a restaurant”.
