My Journey with the IIG

When I began my journey with the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG), I was at one of the lowest points in my personal and professional life. I had the opportunity to enroll in the Roots and Wings mentorship program in 2024, not entirely sure what to expect, but hoping for a spark—something to help me realign and rediscover my confidence. Looking back now, it’s clear that this opportunity came into my life at exactly the right time.

The Roots and Wings program was more than just a professional development initiative; for me, it became a space of healing and growth. My mentor (Allison van Niekerk) played a crucial role in guiding me through what I later understood to be the change process, which mirrors the stages of grief. This journey required me to confront parts of myself that I had suppressed, to reflect on my experiences with honesty, and to embrace the discomfort that comes with transformation.

With my mentor’s support, I began to find my voice again. I learned that speaking up is not just about being heard, but about owning your space and acknowledging your worth. I started seeing glimpses of a stronger, more authentic version of myself—one who is not afraid to take up space, to lead, and to challenge old narratives.

Even after completing the Roots and Wings program, I knew that my journey with the IIG was far from over. When I was given the opportunity to join the Class of program this year, I was filled with gratitude and renewed excitement. I saw this as not just a continuation of my development, but as a deeper commitment to becoming the best version of myself—not only for my own sake, but also to uplift those around me.

The Class of program has already proven to be a truly transformative experience. The environment encourages collaboration, innovation, and bold thinking. Every session brings new insights, challenges, and opportunities to grow—both as an individual and as a future leader in the insurance industry. Being surrounded by like-minded, driven professionals has reignited my passion for what I do, and reminded me of the power in personal development.

My IIG journey has taught me that growth often begins in moments of uncertainty. It has shown me the value of mentorship, the importance of vulnerability, and the strength that comes from facing challenges head-on. I am proud of how far I have come and excited for what still lies ahead.

I remain deeply thankful to Absa Insurance for believing in my potential and for investing in my growth. And to the IIG—I am not done yet. This is only the beginning of a journey filled with purpose, passion, and possibility.
