On 18 September, the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG) hosted its Second Review session for the 2025 Roots & Wings programme. This flagship programme not only brings in a number of mentors, but amazing mentees that describe the journey as nothing short of transformational.
The impact of the programme is evident in the stories shared during the session. Mentees reflected on the remarkable personal and professional growth they’ve experienced since joining. From completing the Enneagram personality profile assessments — helping them better understand their unique strengths and areas of development — to engaging in “double-dating” with other mentors, the journey has been rich with insight, challenge and growth.
This year’s theme focuses strongly on embracing change. Mentees are continuously encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, challenge themselves and build the resilience required to face the workplace.
A key purpose of the mentorship process is for mentors to serve as both a mirror and a guiding light, helping mentees gain clarity on who they are, what they stand for and how they can shape their future with intention and confidence. The guidance and wisdom offered by mentors play a critical role in strengthening the emotional and professional resilience of the next generation of industry leaders.
During the session, our dynamic duo facilitators, Linda and Jenna led a compelling discussion on the concept of resilience, highlighting its importance not just in navigating career challenges, but in managing personal growth as well. Their insights resonated deeply with the mentees and added great value to the overall session.
With the programme now in its final phase, the mentees who began this journey at the start of the year have grown tremendously in confidence, skill and self-awareness. We are confident that the tools, lessons, networks and relationships built through this programme will continue to serve as lifelong learning and guidance.
The visible transformation of our mentees is also a powerful testament to the dedication and generosity of our mentors, who give so selflessly of their time and experience. Your commitment is shaping future leaders and ensuring our industry remains dynamic, inclusive, and forward-thinking.
To our mentors — thank you for your valuable contributions. Your mentorship is not only developing individual professionals but uplifting the insurance industry.
To our mentees — thank you for showing up with courage, curiosity and a willingness to grow. By investing in your future, you’re actively securing the relevance and resilience of our industry’s future.
Witnessing this programme unfold continues to be both inspiring and heartwarming. The IIG remains proud to facilitate such a meaningful initiative — one that empowers individuals, strengthens networks, and fosters a sense of community that will benefit the industry for years to come. The future is in good hands.
