“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ~Nelson Mandela~
In line with what Mandela said, the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG) signed this year’s contract with Graduate Institute of Financial Sciences (GIFS) for the 2020 IIG Academic Programme in March. Despite the current circumstances, the interviews were recently conducted virtually and the programme started on 31 July 2020. For the students’ protection and health, the learning has also been taking place virtually via some e-learning portals. This year’s programme has 44 leaners, which is a big jump from last year where there were 13. The 2020 programme will see some 300 learners in total brought on board through intakes that will take place in the coming weeks and months.
This is the second class of its kind for the IIG in partnership with GIFS. It is one the best initiatives for the IIG because of its impact in changing people’s lives for the better. What excites us all the most is the strides we are making with our partners in our contribution towards South Africa’s socio-economic challenges, which have been worsened by COVID-19.
The programme is targeted at young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who will be equipped with the following during a 12 months’ period:
- NQF level 5 qualification in Insurance
- Regulatory exam RE5 to give them a competitive advantage and a chance in their quest to greater heights in the industry.
- Soft-skills training in-between classes
- Mentorship for the Top 20 from some of the best professionals within the insurance industry
- Workplace learning experience for the Top 20 with some of the leading companies in the industry
Last year’s 13 learners (graduates) are all currently in employment in various insurance and broking companies in the province and are surely making an impact! We will be sharing the progress of the 44 learners with you over the coming weeks and months on the strides they will be making in the 2020 edition of the IIG Academic Programme!
